Welcome to Out of Your League, a queer sports newsletter with a social justice bent. I am currently running a 20% sale on annual subscriptions through December 21st. Two of the three paid subscription tiers come with access to our very active community Discord, as well as events like the monthly book club. This newsletter takes many hours of work each week, and paid subscriptions allow me to be able to dedicate the time to it. Those subscriptions also allow me to pay the people who help me bring this newsletter to life—an editor, tech support, a graphic designer—and who are responsible for helping me achieve the quality of the product you receive in your inboxes each week.
This is my yearly gift guide for the queer sports fan, with a focus on small and independent businesses and creators. It’s free for everyone to read, though it always takes many hours of work on my end. I do not receive commissions on any items here except for the books! It’s broken into sections: OOYL, Subscriptions, Books, and Merch/Gear. Happy shopping!
Give The Gift of OOYL
Sorry not sorry that I’m starting this guide by promoting my own stuff! A paid subscription to Out of Your League makes a great gift, and if you buy it before December 21st it’s 20% off as part of my Sagittarius Season Sale.

You can also buy Out of Your League merch! Mugs, totes, t-shirts, hoodies.
A copy of my book, Hail Mary: The Rise and Fall of the National Women’s Football League also makes a great gift. This one can be purchased for your dad or brother who love football and maybe didn’t know about this professional women’s league. Or your friend who loves women’s history but doesn’t know much about the sport itself.

Did you read and love Hail Mary? Grab a shirt from Homage repping your favorite NWFL team!
Subscriptions
Support independent media this holiday season by gifting a subscription to one of these newsletters or publications:
Rough Notes is the place to go for fun and irreverent queer women’s basketball content, great local community, and fascinating historical deep dives
No Cap Space WBB is giving you everything women’s basketball: WNBA, NCAA, overseas. They break down the nuts and bolts of the teams as well as provide incisive commentary about the state of things. They have a thriving Discord community and are accessible for new fans looking for some 101-level guidance, as well as long-time fans who really want to get into the weeds of it all.
Power Plays is a newsletter about sexism in sports.
Sports Politika covers the intersection of sports and politics, with a special emphasis on white nationalism, fascism, and international implications.
The IX is an independent media outlet that covers a breadth of women’s sports—basketball, golf, tennis, gymnastics, and soccer.
Books
There are lots of books I could recommend and I have a few lists on Bookshop that you can check out:

These are sports books but really they are history books that are very rooted in a particular place: Boom Town: The Fantastical Saga of Oklahoma City, Its Chaotic Foundation, Its Apocalyptic Weather, Its Purloined Basketball Team, and the Dream of Becoming a World Class Metropolis by Sam Anderson; Stealing Home: Los Angeles, the Dodgers, and the Lives Caught in Between by Eric Nusbaum; We Are The Troopers: The Women of the Winningest Team in Pro Football History by Stephen Guinan; Becoming Caitlin Clark: The Unknown Story of a Modern Basketball Superstar by Howard Megdal
Books that provide history and context to a particular sport or league: Black Ball: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Spencer Haywood, and the Generation that Saved the Soul of the NBA by Theresa Runstedtler; The Eagles of Heart Mountain: A True Story of Football, Incarceration, and Resistance in World War II America by Bradford Pearson; Futbolera: Women and Sports in Latin America by Brenda Elsey and Joshua Nadel
Books that offer critical inquiry of a sport(s): Loving Sports When They Don’t Love You Back: Dilemmas of the Modern Fan by Jessica Luther and Kavitha A. Davidson; Game Misconduct: Hockey’s Toxic Culture and How to Fix It by Evan F. Moore and Jashvina Shah; Shut Out: A History of Race and Baseball in Boston by Howard Bryant
Books about traditionally feminized sports: Let’s Get Physical: How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World by Danielle Friedman; Fit Nation: The Gains and Pains of America’s Exercise Obsession by Natalia Mehlman Petrzela; Turning Pointe: How a New Generation of Dancers is Saving Ballet From Itself by Chloe Angyal
