Thank you so much for being here! I am a full-time independent journalist and paid subscriptions to this newsletter allow me to continue to do work like this, as well as support the community that we are building here, which includes events like the book club and our (very active) paid subscriber Discord server.

Our August Book Club selection is Swole: The Making of Men and the Meaning of Muscle by Michael Andor Brodeur. I’ll be sending out date details and a registration link later this week so stay tuned for that!

It’s all just transphobia—and other odds and ends from the week in queer sports

I’m pretty over writing about the anti-trans movement’s hijacking of the WNBA, but a few important things have happened since my post last week about the fact that the WNBA should have disavowed Cunningham’s statements from the beginning (Katelyn Burns had a similarly great piece at Xtra about this, which you should read). I also went on Dave Zirin’s Edge of Sports podcast this week to talk about it, which you can listen to here.

The first thing we’ve seen is that bad-faith actors, like former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White, have said that they plan to declare for the WNBA draft because as long as the league allows “males,” they are eligible to play. The thing is, the WNBA CBA explicitly doesn’t allow men—literally the first eligibility criteria listed is that you must be a woman.
